Setsubun – Feb 3

Feb 3rd is a special day here in Japan as Setsubun (the day before Spring) is celebrated.  Roasted soybeans are thrown at either a family member wearing the demon mask, or out the door while saying the phrase “Demons out! Luck in!” and then the door is shut. Sadly, we did not hear or see anyone throwing any soybeans today. But then we spent most of the day indoors with our sick kiddos. Apparently there is also a special type of sushi made for this celebration called Ehomaki, created from seven ingredients. We haven’t tried it yet! Read more about the festival here.
